Virtual Wire : Optimisation of Virtual Ethernet

چکیده

The focus of this report has been to establish a common communication medium through which a higher number of services can be integrated in a cheap and efficient manner. Namely, the report advocates the adoption of layer 2 connectivity between customers on a network as a way to multiplex up the number of services that a network can maintain. Emulating Layer 2 services across a common packet network offers a way for network providers to accommodate the needs of their customers while at the same time reducing the cost of their own network. Vtun is a piece of software available from the open source software community that can be used to create virtual tunnels over TCP/IP networkes. This report presents a novel approach to providing a ’Nearlynet’ type solution by enhancing the Linux kernel using Vtun in order to create minimal service Ethernet functionality and high speed tunneling services for deployment within a network.
